When is the best age to start learning an instrument?

This is a question we get asked frequently at Beatbox and our answer is – we have some recommended starting ages for the instruments we teach but every individual is different and each student develops at a different rate so there are often exceptions to our guide below…

Age chart for learning a musical instrument

Singing

We usually recommend students can start learning to sing as young as 5yrs+.
Young singing students can expect to start with singing either a disney song or nursery rhyme before moving onto some pop/contemporary songs repertoire or repertoire that the student is interested in learning. If you’re interested in learning to sing with our team you can learn more on our
singing lessons page.

Piano & Keyboard

We usually recommend students can learn piano or keyboard as young as 6-7yrs old.

Young students will most likely start with learning a scale and a simple melody using the right hand, we can then introduce notes on the left hand and when the student is confident we start playing both hands together!

If you’re interested in learning to play the piano with our team you can learn more about our
piano lessons and read about our recommendations for starter pianos and keyboards.

Guitar

We usually recommend students can learn to play the guitar from ages 7-8yrs+. We would usually start off teaching beginners at this age how to play single fretted notes including melodies and theme tunes, simplified chord shapes and moving on to strumming rhythms & songs sheets.

If you’re interested in learning to play the guitar with our team you can learn more about our
guitar lessons and read about our recommendations for beginner guitars.

Ukulele

We usually recommend students can learn to play the ukulele from ages 6-7yrs+, slightly younger than guitar due to it’s size!

Young Ukulele students may begin playing single notes, this could be a disney melody, nursery rhyme or one-octave scale before moving onto basic chord shapes and famous pop/contemporary songs and repertoire as requested by the student.

We would usually start off teaching beginners at this age how to play single fretted notes including melodies and theme tunes, simplified chord shapes and moving on to rhythm exercises / song sheets and chord playing.

Bass Guitar

We recommend 7-8yrs as a minimum age for learning the bass guitar – but some students of this age may struggle due it’s size and long neck! Smaller scale instruments are also available these days and you can find more information about our beginner bass guitar recommendations on our ListenLoveLearn blog.

We would usually start off teaching beginners bassists how to play single fretted notes, arpeggios and short pop and rock riffs such as ‘Another One Bites The Dust‘.

bass lessons page.

Drums

We usually recommend students can learn to play the drums from ages 7-8ys+.

Whilst we do ossasionally teach younger students it’s essential that they are able to confortably sit on a drum stool and reach all parts of the kit!

We would usually start off teaching beginners at this age how to play a basic rudiment (like a Paradiddle) before moving onto playing a basic rock beat.

If you’re interested in learning to play the drums with our team you can learn more about our drum lessons on our drum lessons page.
