How singing has helped me…

Hi, I’m Amelia – 14yrs.

I’ve been having singing lessons with Beatbox for 6 years and have been singing since my earliest memory.

This week I’ve been on work experience with Beatbox and have decided to write a blog about how singing has personally benefitted me. Please bare with me as this is the first blog I’ve ever written (and it could be the last!), here we go…

Breathing and posture…

Would you believe that most people actually breathe incorrectly?

If you do not breathe correctly when you’re singing you limit your air intake. This means that you won’t be able to hold long notes or take breaths correctly throughout a song. I spent years correcting my breathing by doing various exercises such as practising holding my breath, counting how long I can hold a note and ensuring that when I breathe in my lungs and diaphragm always expand outwards – instead of lifting my shoulders up. These exercises have enabled me to to be able to sing longer and more powerful notes.

Posture is also really important for me… I’ve found that if you are not standing up straight or if you are hunched over you are limiting the amount of air you can take in and you can find yourself gasping for air every now and then throughout a song!

Emotionally and mentally…

Over the years singing has become an all-day necessity for me from the moment I wake up in the morning to when I fall asleep at night. Singing is what I use when I’m sad to help cheer me up, but I also sing when I’m feeling upbeat and happy. I use singing as a soother for my nerves; when I’m anxious I will often catch myself humming away! Singing is now how I express my emotions but also something I use to entertain others. Over the years I have started to put more of my emotion into my songs and have used my songs as a way of turning everyday problems into music.

Writing my own songs has helped my own mental health tremendously – it can feel like a weight is being lifted off my shoulders and instead has been (in a positive way) put into my music. I feel this has benefitted the way in which I deal with stress and anxiety; instead of creating a bad habit to deal with it, I now turn towards my voice and the strength within it. I feel overall this has made me a happier and more uplifting person in general and has brought me great joy.

Everyday life and the future…

Singing has helped me to make deeper connections with people and friendships with people of similar interests, styles, and voices. The majority of my friends outside of school I have met through singing and concerts. I have found it to be a great icebreaker in awkward conversations because it gives you something to talk about and relate to while both having an interest and understanding of the subject. I would love to pursue music and performing as a career.
